Snack Recall Update As FDA Issues Highest Risk Level
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a classification update on a snack product recall initiated earlier this month, categorizing it under Class I, the agency’s highest risk level.
This classification indicates that consuming the product could potentially cause serious health issues or even death.
As stated on the FDA website, the agency currently has three recall classifications, depending on potential risk factors:
Class I – a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
Class II – a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
Class III – a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.
A recall is “a method of removing or correcting products that are in violation of laws administered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recall is a voluntary action that takes place because manufacturers and distributors carry out their responsibility to protect the public health and well-being from products that present a risk of injury or gross deception or are otherwise defective,” as stated on the agency’s website.
The product in question is Bikano Moong Dal Crunchy Green Gram from California-based Thal Golden Spices Inc. and was originally distributed to 7 retail stores in California. As reported previously by Newsweek, the item was recalled as it may be contaminated with salmonella, which can sometimes cause serious and even fatal infections.

According to a company announcement by Thal Golden Spices:
“The product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates Salmonella bacteria causes about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year, with food being the source of most of these illnesses.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled snack, with details matching the above, are advised to discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone with concerns about the product can call Thal Golden Spices Inc. at 510-429-1797 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
