Giants, Blue Jays Must Pivot After Burnes Signs With Diamondbacks
The San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are running out of quality options to fill their starting rotation.
It was announced early Sunday morning that Corbin Burnes agreed to a six-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now, these teams have to look elsewhere. Here are three of the top options remaining for them.
Jack Flaherty
After the news broke about Burnes, Jack Flaherty became the best option remaining in free agency. Flaherty recorded a 3.17 ERA last season between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers over 28 starts.
Flaherty bounced back well after having a disappointing 2023 season. He continued his high strikeout rate from much of his career while reducing the number of walks conceded. Flaherty is projected to sign a three-year, $63 million contract.
José Quintana
José Quintana is getting older, but he proved he’s still a workhorse. He made 31 starts in 2024 with the New York Mets, which he has done on many occasions in his career.
Quintana doesn’t necessarily have the same strikeout ability he once did, but he’s adapted and found other ways to retire batters. Switching how he gets outs won’t stop him from getting a solid contract this offseason. Quintana is projected to sign a two-year deal worth $16 million.
Nick Pivetta
Nick Pivetta returned to the Boston Red Sox’s rotation in 2024 and recorded a 4.14 ERA in 26 starts. He gave up a lot of hard contact, but he boasted a 4.8:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Pivetta won’t be an ace like Burnes, but he can certainly bolster the rotations of both the Giants and Blue Jays as a No. 3 or No. 4 starter. Pivetta is projected to sign a four-year, $60 million contract.
