Julia Stiles’ True Feelings About Late Co-Star Heath Ledger
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Julia Stiles is looking back on a time when she and the late Heath Ledger shared a special bond, specifically the connection from their iconic film 10 Things I Hate About You.
The 43-year-old actress opened up about her fond memories of Ledger in a recent interview with E! News which was published on Tuesday, January 14, celebrating his lighthearted spirit and how he stood out among the ensemble cast.
“He was amazing,” Stiles said. “He was such a bright light.” She recalled how, even in a group of talented co-stars, Ledger’s presence was unique. “He just walked into the room and lit it up,” she added.
For Stiles, this film marked her first starring role in a major production, making Ledger’s kindness and generosity even more significant. “He was very kind and generous to me,” she shared, noting how important it was for her to feel comfortable with her on-screen love interest, especially in such a big studio film. She fondly remembered their on-screen chemistry, particularly their paintball date scene, which was “really, really fun” to film.
Stiles reflected on the more emotional moments as well, especially when her character, Kat, reads her iconic poem aloud in class. “I did not expect to start crying or tearing up,” she admitted. “But it just happened because the movie was coming to an end, and I was so moved by the whole experience.”
Time has only added to Stiles’ admiration for the film’s lasting impact. “It was really important to me as my first big role as an actress,” she said, noting that it still resonates with audiences, particularly those from younger generations who continue to discover the 1999 classic.
Ledger tragically passed away in January 2008 at the age of 28. The Brokeback Mountain star’s death was the result of an accidental overdose, with a combination of prescription medications found in his system, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, and diazepam. At the time of his death, Ledger had a daughter, Matilda Rose, with actress Michelle Williams –– Matilda was just 2 years old when he passed.
Matilda, now 19, was spotted out in New York on Sunday, January 12, showcasing a striking resemblance to both of her famous parents. The teen has grown up largely out of the public and under the watchful eye of Williams, 44. Ledger and Williams were never married, though they were together from 2004 to 2007, welcoming Matilda into the world in 2005.
