Suns Make Sneaky Signing, Land Top Remaining Player in Free Agency

Free agent point guard Tyus Jones has found a new home for the upcoming 2024-25 season. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Phoenix Suns have signed the guard to a one-year, $3.3 million deal.

Wojnarowski shared the news on Saturday via Twitter/X.

Jones also shared why he decided to sign with the Suns via ESPN.

“The chance to play for the Phoenix Suns made the most sense on a lot of levels to me and my family — beginning with the way [governor] Mat Ishbia and the front office recruited me to how coach [Mike Budenholzer] showed me how I can significantly impact a team that has a real opportunity to challenge for an NBA title as their starting point guard,” Jones told ESPN on Saturday.

“My agent [Bradbury] walked me and my family through multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals at a number of different financial levels, but the Suns’ opportunity is where I can best maximize my value for a return to free agency next year as well as give myself a chance to be part of what I think will be a special team and season.”

The Suns desperately needed a point guard, and they got just that in Jones. For the past handful of seasons, he’s been among the top backup point guards in the NBA. It’s unclear what role he will play for the Suns, whether he will start or come off the bench, but his role will be significant.

Jones is coming off his first and only season with the Washington Wizards, one of the worst teams in the league. The nine-year NBA veteran guard averaged 12.0 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, while he shot 48.9 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three. The 28-year-old has established himself as a solid point guard in the league.

Despite that being the case, he was on the open market for quite a while and will now play for one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Jones will join the Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal in the desert, who finished with the No. 6 seed in the West last year.

Although the Suns’ season ended in a sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves, they hope for a healthy one and a team with more depth than last. Jones will join his fourth NBA team as he enters his 10th season.
