Blockbuster Trade Projection Would Send Marlins Sandy Alcantara To Giants

The San Francisco Giants were rumored to be heavily interested in signing free-agent pitcher Corbin Burnes. But Burnes ultimately signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving San Francisco out to dry.

The Giants, who are looking to win in 2025, need to go out and bring in another starting pitcher this winter.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently suggested the Giants would be the best fit in a trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara after San Francisco whiffed on Burnes. Alcantara missed the 2024 season with an injury, but he brought home an impressive Cy Young award in 2022.

Here’s the deal proposed by Rymer which would send Alcantara to the Giants:

• Miami Marlins receive: LHP Kyle Harrison, OF Luis Matos

“Despite initial reports that they offered Corbin Burnes more than the $210 million he accepted from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says this is not the case,” Rymer wrote. “Either way, the Giants still have a rotation hole that was formerly occupied by Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner in his own right. Though San Francisco would surely protect the one top-100 prospect among its talent inventory, it would have to prepare to give up real value if it went after Alcantara.”

Alcantara would be a huge addition to the Giants. At his best, he’s one of the better pitchers in baseball. He’s under team control through 2027 at an affordable price. But it would cost them two young stars.

Harrison, 23, flashed signs of excellence in his first full season in 2024. He made 24 starts with a 4.56 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Matos, 22, has struggled in both his first two big league seasons. He’s posted a 78 OPS+ in 378 career games.

Both players being sent to Miami are raw prospects with a lot of potential.
