Cam Newton Doesn’t Consider Himself Greatest Dual-Threat QB Ever

Former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton was one of the most fun watches over the last 20 years in the league. His ability to read defenses was excellent and he became one of the more unstoppable forces in the league during the height of his 11-year playing career. He is seen as one of the best dual-threat players to ever grace the field, helping to lead the charge for the new era of dual-threat signal-callers around the NFL today.

Newton was asked on the 4th and I Show if he considered himself the greatest dual-threat quarterback to play the game and he responded by saying no. But he did mention current NFL MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens as his pick.

Newton cited the style of play from Jackson as the difference in his assessment. The speed that Jackson possesses allows him to be a complete game-changer anytime he steps on the field. He has won two MVPs across his still-young career, showing how special of a player he truly is. Newton also mentioned former NFL quarterback Michael Vick in this conversation.

“Lamar’s style is different than mine,” Newton said. “He’s got big plays, any play. He’s got speed that I never had. And he’s just a legend. And then, I played the game more powerful … I can run, but I’m going to probably get caught. Vick, Lamar, they ain’t getting caught.”

Newton was one of the better dual-threat quarterbacks to play the game, but he did most of his damage near the endzone. He may be the best dual-threat player within a certain amount of yards of the endzone, as Newton wouldn’t be denied when he attempted to score touchdowns. He won the 2015 MVP due to this and helped the Carolina Panthers reach the Super Bowl. Neither Jackson, so far, nor Vick has ever reached the championship game, giving Newton more team success.

Where things stand right now, Newton sits in second place for most rushing yards by a quarterback ever. Vick is in first place with 6,109 yards but Jackson is quickly inching closer to the record. He is currently at 5,258 and is only 27 years old. If Jackson has a few more successful seasons, Newton’s pick could turn out to be completely accurate.
