Celtics Sign Former Lakers Guard To Bolster Roster Depth
The reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics have added more depth to their overall roster. Boston has agreed to a one-year deal with guard Lonnie Walker IV.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to break the news on social media.
Walker IV’s deal with Boston is an Exhibit 10 contract. This means that Boston can give him a bonus worth up to $77,500 if the team decides to waive him after training camp and he ends up playing for their G League affiliate for at least 60 games this season.
NBA insider Shams Charania broke down the details of the deal on social media.
Walker IV spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets, appearing in 58 games. He averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.6 steals per game.
The former University of Miami product shot 38.4 percent from beyond the 3-point line last season. Should he make Boston’s standard roster, Walker would give the loaded Celtics another strong shooter to work with off the bench.
Walker is a former first-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs. He hasn’t been able to live up to the hype that surrounded him when he entered the NBA, but has stayed ready whenever his name has been called upon.
One of his most memorable moments thus far in his young career was during his one-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. Walker was in and out of the Los Angeles lineup all season but got the call in a pivotal Game 4 against the Golden State Warriors in the semi-finals.
He scored all of his 15 points in the final quarter for the Lakers, helping them to overcome a seven-point deficit to Golden State. The Lakers went on to win the series 4-2 but the performance of Walker made an impact on everyone involved.
After the series ended, Warriors star Stephen Curry gifted Walker a signed jersey to commemorate his performance. Curry signed it with a message.
“To Lonnie, keep building. All love. Will never forgive you for Game 4…”
Now landing in Boston, Walker might have a chance to show what he can do again on the biggest stages. The Celtics just won the NBA title and are likely to be favored to win it again this coming season.
Boston is bringing back its entire 2023-24 core. Walker could just add to the strong depth that the Celtics have. He will need to earn his minutes but like always, Walker should be ready for any challenges ahead of him.
