Giants HC Brian Daboll Weighs in on Daniel Jones’ Mixed Preseason Performance

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones made his preseason debut on Saturday against the Houston Texans. It was a mixed bag of results for Jones in his first game back after tearing his ACL last season.

He started out very slow, throwing two picks early on. This includes an absurdly thrown ball deep in his own endzone that was snagged for a pick-six.

The veteran quarterback finished the day going 11-18 for 138 yards and two interceptions. It’s not the start that anyone in the organization wanted to see from Jones, but at least he bounced back a little after his early struggles.

After the game, Giants head coach Brian Daboll addressed the mixed results from the start. He alluded to it just being preseason but wants to see more from Jones moving forward.

“That’s what these games are for too,” Daboll said, per the team transcript. “Some evaluation part of it, but, obviously you have a plan going into it. It’s a little bit different than I would say a regular season game where you’re scheming and doing things like that. I wanted to make sure we had enough plays where we were throwing it down the field, giving opportunities to throw it down the field. Again, there was some good things, good to get him out here and then a couple things we’ll learn from, and that’s what these things are for.”

But the hope in any preseason game is to make it out without any injury, no matter the results. Jones did just that and spoke about his health after the fact.

“I feel good physically,” Jones said. “Felt really good and excited to be out there. Grateful for all the people who have helped me get to this point. All the doctors and trainers and the staff we have here who have helped me. It was fun to be out there. Didn’t start perfect, like I said, but we got going and I feel good physically.”

After taking the team to the postseason in 2022, Jones took a step backward last season, even prior to his injury. He finished the season throwing for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions over six games played.

2024 is set to be a make-or-break year for Jones, as the Giants must evaluate whether he is the right choice for them moving forward.
