Is ‘Swifties for Trump’ Real? What We Know

Taylor Swift is one of the most famous people on the planet, and it’s been argued that her political endorsement could turn tides, so many in the United States are keenly watching the pop star in the run-up to November’s election.

In 2020, Swift backed the campaign of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and there is certainly no love lost between her and former President Donald Trump, whom she has accused of “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism.”

On August 18, Donald Trump shared a series of images on Truth Social that suggested the country singer and a group of her followers called “Swifties for Trump” had endorsed him ahead of the presidential election on November 5. He wrote in the caption, “I accept!”

Many of the images, including one of the singer-songwriter dressed as Uncle Sam with the caption “Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump,” appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence.

On X, formerly Twitter, users expressed their outrage, with one calling Trump “pathetic” and another urging Swift to have her legal team respond to the “use of AI to spread misinformation.”

Newsweek contacted Taylor Swift’s representatives and Donald Trump’s campaign for comment by email.

The Republicans Against Trump X account posted a screenshot of Trump’s post, adding: “OMG. Trump is so desperate. He just posted AI-generated pictures about swifties for Trump.”

However, there is evidence that some of Swift’s fans support the prospect of returning Trump the White House.

One of the images in Trump’s post—of a woman in a white “Swifties for Trump” T-shirt—is not fake, according to Wisconsin Right Now. The outlet reported that Jenna Piwowarczyk wore the homemade T-shirt to a Trump rally in Racine, Wisconsin, in June.

There is also evidence of an online “Swifties for Trump” movement. In a TikTok video posted by user @trendyandspendy, a woman can be seen posing in a bright pink MAGA hat.

The user wrote in the video’s text overlay, “Raise your hand if you’re a Swiftie who will be heading to the polls in November jamming to Taylor Swift & placing your vote for Donald Trump!”

Many TikTok fans voiced their agreement, suggesting there may be a bigger overlap between Trump’s and Swift’s fan bases than supposed. Responding to the video, one user commented, “Didn’t know there were more of us, thank goodness.” Another said, “Also can we remember that it’s okay to have diff political views from celebs we like!”

TikToker @kandis_espo also declared her support for Trump, saying in a post on the platform: “I never thought I’d see the day that Swifties were rallying for Trump. I guess something with ISIS happened. There’s a lot of terrorism going on. I guess she had to shut down some shows because of it. A lot of them [Taylor Swift fans] are just saying, ‘You know, if Trump was in office, this would have never ever happened. She would be safe. There wouldn’t be terrorism or wars going on because we had world peace before, and he’ll do it again.’

“So they’re finally realizing that it’s not about race or gender or anything of that sort. It’s about our safety and the policies and a secure border.”

One user commented on the video, “Swifties for Trump baby,” while another said, “Been a Red Swiftie for a long while now, so happy for the girls!”

Newsweek contacted @trendyandspendy and @kandis_espo for comment via TikTok.

On X, a “Swifties for Trump” account has amassed more than 3,000 followers, while a “Swifties for Kamala” X account—launched shortly after Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on July 21 and endorsed Harris to replace him as the Democratic Party’s nominee—has garnered more than 60,000 followers.

It’s no surprise that the singer’s fan base appears to lean Democratic. In 2020, Swift criticized Trump for his comments about Black Lives Matter protests and accused him of dismantling the U.S. postal system to “blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk in an effort to hold on to power.”

For his part, Trump has reportedly declared he is more famous than Swift and questioned the legitimacy of her liberal leanings.

Experts have said Swift is likely delaying her endorsement of Harris so that it can have the maximum effect at the polls.

Explaining the value of celebrity endorsements, a public relations expert recently told Newsweek: “Now, the vast majority of the U.S. population won’t know a presidential candidate personally, but if someone they admire is backing them, that will definitely boost their opinion of them and make them sit up and take notice of the things they stand for.”
