Mets Predicted To Sign Tanner Scott To Complement Juan Soto Signing

The New York Mets, following a long and expensive bidding war, won the Juan Soto sweepstakes. New York agreed to terms on a 15-year, $765 million deal with the former New York Yankees superstar.

Now, the Mets need to continue improving their roster to build around Soto. There are a lot of places New York could look to upgrade in the coming weeks.

FanSided’s Michael Brakebill recently recommended the Mets pursue an expensive upgrade to the bullpen to complement Soto. Brakebill urged the Mets to pursue San Diego Padres closer Tanner Scott in free agency. Spotrac projects Scott to sign a four-year, $65 million contract.

“Getting a left-handed closer like Tanner Scott to pair with Edwin Diaz is essential for the Mets this offseason. With matchups being key in the analytical world of today’s baseball, having the ability to match up as best as possible will further add to the Mets’ win total in 2025,” Brakebill wrote. “With the Phillies still looking to improve and the Braves getting healthy, adding a top reliever has to be a priority.”

While adding Scott would be a dream come true for the Mets, there are much better places to spend $20 million a year. New York needs to add to the starting rotation, first and foremost. It could also look to upgrade in the infield and in the designated hitter spot. Acquiring a closer when Edwin Diaz is on the roster should be the least of the team’s worries.

This doesn’t mean the Mets shouldn’t add to the bullpen, but investing $65 million into Scott would be quite a steep ask directly after sending $765 million to Soto.
