NASCAR Appeals Panel Delivers Verdict On Hefty Ty Majeski Fine
The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has upheld a penalty imposed on Ty Majeski for missing media obligations due to his commitment to in-person voting.
The media event in question, Playoffs Media Day, is as a crucial promotional moment leading up to the season’s concluding race. Held in North Carolina on November 5, it fell just days before the climactic face-off at Phoenix Raceway. Majeski’s absence led NASCAR to fine him $12,500, citing a breach of Rule Book Section 4.4.A, which pertains to “failure to complete media obligations.”
According to the panel:
“Driver failed to meet contractual agreement with NASCAR. One of the most, if not most, important media obligations of the entire season.”
Standing firm in his decision, Majeski explained:
“I felt like I needed to do my duty as a [United States] citizen to vote,” Majeski explained at the time.
“My team owners and I, Duke [Thorson], Rhonda [Thorson], Allison, we all made the decision to exercise that right.”
He added:
“We certainly knew about it. I didn’t specifically have much communication with NASCAR prior. I let everybody internally at ThorSport handle those communications prior to not being there on Tuesday. So, yeah, I feel like they knew our position. Kind of unprecedented this has never happened before. Election Day, everyone knew it was Election Day for a long time.”
A spokesperson for NASCAR also noted that the timings of the media obligations could have been altered had they known that it conflicted with his voting.
As the situation stands, it’s uncertain how Majeski and ThorSport Racing intend to proceed. The appeal’s acknowledgement by the panel, comprised of Hunter Nickell, Cathy Rice, and Lake Speed, does not preclude further action.
