Sandwich Recall Sparks Warning in Seven States
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers in seven states that prepackaged sandwiches may be contaminated with a potentially deadly bacteria.
A voluntary recall announcement shared to the FDA website on Tuesday warns that a number of individually wrapped sandwiches produced by Classic Delight LLC, based in St. Marys, Ohio, could contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that sometimes causes fatal infections in the elderly, young children and those with compromised immune systems.
The company recalled 25 different products that may have been sent to convenience stores, vending machines and food service distributors in Texas, California, Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The items were all produced from May 11, 2023, to June 6, 2024.

Classic Delight said that the recall was initiated after environmental samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Production of the recalled products has been paused pending results of an FDA investigation to determine the source of the bacteria.
While no illnesses associated with the sandwiches had been reported at the time of publication, the company urged consumers to throw away the recalled items or return them for a refund. Those with concerns about potential illness were asked to contact their health care providers.
Customers with additional questions can contact the Classic Delight Consumer Hotline at 419-300-3202 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday Pacific time, or by emailing info@classicdelight.com.
Newsweek reached out for comment to Classic Delight LLC via email on Tuesday night.
Listeriosis, an infection of Listeria monocytogenes, can result in severe symptoms even in those who are otherwise healthy. About 260 of an estimated 1,600 annual cases are fatal, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
While many infections are limited to the digestive system, with symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting developing within 24 hours of consuming contaminated food, a more invasive form of the illness develops in some within two weeks.
Symptoms of invasive illness include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures. About one in 20 nonpregnant people with invasive listeriosis will die of the illness.
For those who are pregnant, symptoms are generally mild or nonexistent, but invasive illness “usually leads to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn,” according to the CDC.
