Surprise NFL Team Could Have QB Competition Sooner Rather Than Later
With the NFL season starting next weekend, most teams are set on who their starting quarterback will be. The quarterback position remains the most important to a football team, thus making it beneficial for the players to know who is leading the charge.
However, sometimes, unexpected competition arises from out of nowhere. The New Orleans Saints may soon have a surprising battle for the starting spot.
While veteran Derek Carr is the starter for right now, rookie Spencer Rattler has been making a lot of noise within the building. The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini spoke with former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel and hinted at some potential competition.
“The text I received from someone in the building was like, the vibes are really, really HIGH. Capital letters, right? So the follow-up question is wait, is he going to beat out Carr? Do we have a quarterback competition?”
Per Russini, the source said that right now there isn’t any quarterback controversy, but it is something to keep an eye on going forward.
While Carr remains locked in to help lead the Saints forward this season, having Rattler behind him could be intriguing. If Carr struggles to start the year, the idea of throwing Rattler out into the fire becomes more interesting for New Orleans.
Carr is heading into year two with the Saints. In 2023, he led them to a record of 9-8. They missed the playoffs, but he seemed to look more comfortable in the offense toward the end of the season.
The veteran threw for 3,878 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year. But the only thing that matters in the NFL is winning, and at the end of the day, New Orleans did miss the playoffs.
Rattler was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. The former No. 1 quarterback coming out of high school has impressed this preseason.
NFL Films’ Greg Cosell has been one of the main people hyped up on the potential of Rattler.
“Spencer Rattler was one of the most intriguing guys coming out of the draft,” Cosell said. “I was surprised he was a fifth-round pick… this kid can throw a football…his tape at South Carolina was a little erratic and inconsistent at times, he played behind a fairly poor o-line…he’s a very gifted thrower of the football. People may forget he was the No. 1 quarterback coming out of high school.”
Rattler’s time in the NFL will come down the line, but it very well could be sooner than most people thought.
