‘The Penguin’ Shocks Fans With Final Episode—Will There Be a Second Season?

Sunday night’s finale of HBO series The Penguin was shocking to say the least. But does it leave the door open for Season 2?

The Batman movie spinoff The Penguin tells the story of Gotham City gangster Oswald “Oz” Cobb, who goes by the moniker “The Penguin” and his rise to power. Colin Farrell reprises the role of Oz from the 2022 film The Batman.

In the eighth and final episode of the series, all storylines seemed to come to a head. Oz abducted Sofia and returned her to the Arkham Asylum, imprisoned his vegetative mother in his own home and ruthlessly murdered his mentee and driver Victor.

Following the dramatic ending, Google searches for whether there would be a second season of The Penguin spiked.

Wowed fans also took to social media to express their shock after the dramatic final episode.

“Wow… what an ending…The Penguin was an awesome show… Intriguing. Action packed. Shocking. And definitely some of the best TV we’ve gotten this season,” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter.

“THE PENGUIN season finale was just absolutely spectacular. Remarkably well written, acted, & directed & the most cinematic episode by far,” wrote another social media user.

And it seems they were not alone, as fans agreed the ending was “spectacular” and the “cherry on top of one of the best individual seasons of television I’ve seen.”

Will There Be a Second Season of ‘The Penguin’?

The Penguin was originally created as a limited series that would bridge the gap between 2022 film The Batman and sequel The Batman: Part II, which is to come out in 2026. A second season of The Penguin is yet to be confirmed, but The Penguin creator Lauren LeFranc and The Batman director Matt Reeves are currently in talks with HBO to extend the series, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Newsweek has emailed HBO for comment.

Star Colin Farrell has already said he is open to a second season, providing the script is up to the mark.

“If there’s a great idea [for Season 2], and the writing was really muscular and as strong or stronger on the page than it was the first season, of course I would do it,” Farrell said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

He added that the fan response to the series was important in shaping his feelings around a second season, saying “I love being in things that are critically approved—it’s much better than the alternative—but I’ve been around long enough [to know] that it’s the audience who are really the most important critics.”

However, despite being in talks with HBO, The Penguin creator Lauren Le Franc seemed less sure about a second season, saying it should only go ahead if it could outdo the first season.

“My task was to make a bridge between the The Batman and The Batman: Part II,” LeFranc told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love all these characters, and it is been so much fun writing all of them, and it’s such an engaging world. There are endless stories you could tell in this world. I don’t think anything should continue if there are not better stories to tell, or if you can’t one up yourself creatively. And so I think the only way for something like this to continue is if you feel like you can tell just as rich of a story, if not richer.”
