Why Johnny Depp’s Lawyer Didn’t Date Him After Amber Heard Trial
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Camille Vasquez, otherwise known as Johnny Depp’s high-profile attorney, has put an end to persistent rumors regarding a romantic relationship with her famous client.
Simply put, he’s, “not my type,” Vasquez admitted during a recent interview with Extra that was posted on Saturday, November 2. The lawyer addressed speculation that arose during the publicized $100 million defamation case against Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard.
“I would never,” Vasquez, 40, said to the publication, lamenting, “Let me just go on the record here: never dated Johnny Depp. Never would date Johnny Depp.” She even went on to detail actually having a conversation with her parents about the rumors, making sure they were clear that she had no romantic ties to the Black Mass actor. Despite all that, she revealed that she and Depp, 61, maintain a friendship and are in regular contact.
The attorney also mentioned that she wasn’t really aware of Depp’s expansive filmography, saying, “I have not seen him in ‘Pirates [of the Caribbean].'” She humorously acknowledged only catching a glimpse of him in the 2000 film Chocolat.
Vasquez did express her fascination with Depp’s unique perspective. After their first meeting, she described having an “out-of-body experience,” reflecting on how differently he views the world, saying, “he definitely uses a different part of his brain.”
Vasquez represented the actor during his 2022 trial, which lasted for six weeks in Fairfax, Virginia, beginning in April and concluding on June 1 of the same year. The legal battle stemmed from 38-year-old Heard’s op-ed in The Washington Post, in which she described herself as a public figure advocating against domestic abuse – and all but identified the Blow alum by name in the process.
Depp sued her for defamation, claiming the piece damaged his reputation and career. The jury ultimately awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and an additional $5 million in punitive damages, although the punitive amount was later reduced to $350,000 due to state laws.
Depp and Heard were married for two years from February 2015 to January 2017.
