Woman Considering Canceling Going to Friend’s Wedding for Another “Social Event” Sparks Fury

A woman who is considering canceling going to her friend’s wedding to attend her Maid of Honor’s baby shower has been slammed on social media.

The woman and original poster (OP), Reddit user throwaway101101005, took to r/AmItheA****** to share her dilemma, explaining that her Maid of Honor (MOH) had recently announced her pregnancy.

The pair had been discussing plans for her baby shower with their friend “Ben”, and the MOH had wanted to schedule it for a weekend that clashed with a wedding the OP had committed to attending.

The OP also had plans to attend another event in the same location as the wedding with a separate friend, and when she expressed hesitation about canceling both plans, the conversation escalated.

“I explained that if it came down to it, I would cancel both of them for her baby shower, but it just sucks to be in this position,” the OP noted.

She continued, “I also feel upset that she doesn’t find it significant that I am being expected to cancel plans with multiple people that involve travel. Her opinion is I should have little problem canceling these other things for her baby shower.

“I love her, I will, but it still f****** sucks.”

Despite the disagreement, the two friends ultimately resolved the conflict, with the MOH choosing a different weekend for her baby shower. In an update, the OP clarified that had the date been set in stone from the beginning, she would not have objected to attending.

The argument, however, left her questioning whether she was wrong for initially refusing to change her plans or if her MOH was unreasonable in expecting her to do so.

Redditors flocked to the comments to weigh in, with many criticizing the OP’s approach to the situation. Some felt she placed undue blame on her MOH rather than simply owning her decision.

One wrote, “YTA for putting your decision on your MOH instead of owning it yourself. She wants to have her shower on the one weekend you’re unavailable. That sucks and you’d be totally within your rights to tell her you’re so sorry, but you’re busy with a wedding that weekend.”

Others were more critical, particularly about the OP’s consideration of skipping her other friend’s wedding. One Redditor asked, “Sorry, but you plan to cancel going to your friend’s wedding to go to this friend’s baby shower? I mean, really?

“You have your priorities wrong. A wedding is more important than a baby shower. Can’t believe I had to type that.”

Friendships and Expectations

According to BetterHelp, friendships thrive on mutual understanding and effort, but disagreements over scheduling and perceived obligations can strain even the closest relationships.

While making compromises is important, feeling forced into prioritizing one event over another can create resentment that could cause trouble later down the line.

Furthermore, Newsweek has reported on how some friendships can turn toxic when one person consistently expects the other to accommodate their needs without reciprocation.
