American Fans Taking Heat After Matt Fitzpatrick Defeats Scottie Scheffler
Matt Fitzpatrick knew he wouldn’t be the favorite amongst the fans in a final group pairing with Scottie Scheffler on Sunday for the final round of the RBC Heritage.
“Yeah, yeah, 100 percent,“ he said when asked if he believes the fans would be behind Scheffler. “We’re in America, so I wouldn’t expect any different. Yeah, they’ve got to support their guy, and that’s totally fine. As long as they don’t shout in my backswing, then they can do whatever they want. But I have a lot of people that support me this week, as well, and just looking forward to it.
Fitzpatrick entered the day with a three-shot lead over Scheffler, but saw that lead slowly evaporate until the final hole when Scheffler’s par and Fitzpatrick’s bogey sent the twosome into a playoff.

Fans erupted in applause when Fitzpatrick botched the 18th and let the Englishman have it for the next few minutes until he silenced the crowd with a birdie in the first hole of the playoff to take down the American star – adding a shush to the crowd for good measure.
“Nothing better sums up the Ryder Cup experience over the past 25 years than an American gallery making an ass of itself followed by a European immediately shoving it in their faces,” golf writer Joel Beal said plainly.
Fitzpatrick previously revealed his parents skipped the Ryder Cup in 2025 because of their experience at Whistling Straits in 2021.
“They didn’t have a great experience in Whistling Straits,” he said. “That’s not a lie or anything or making anything up.”
He got the last laugh in the end this time.
