Team Japan had already clinched its pool heading into Tuesday’s final matchup against Czechia, which led to the decision to rest Shohei Ohtani and Seiya Suzuki.
Czechia took advantage of those absences early, pushing Japan to the brink until the eighth inning. In a 0-0 game, Japan suddenly erupted for nine runs — including multiple home runs, one of which was a grand slam — to secure a 9-0 victory.
However, one of the most viral moments came in between innings and centered around Ohtani, who shared a heartwarming interaction with a young fan after coming out to warm up the right fielder.
While tossing a baseball into the stands, the fan initially dropped the ball, prompting Ohtani to rush over and retrieve it to make sure it ended up in the child’s hands — leaving the young fan with a massive smile.

The video quickly surpassed 2 million views in less than two hours after being posted on Major League Baseball’s social media account, with fans praising Shohei Ohtani.
“Making sure the ball reached the right hands rather than just tossing it casually says something about the intention behind the gesture,” one fan said.
Someone else added, “It is great to see athletes taking a moment to connect with the crowd and create memories like this.”

Team Japan finished pool play with a perfect 4-0 record, and both Ohtani and Suzuki will likely return to the lineup when they begin elimination play on Saturday. They are set to face the loser of Wednesday night’s matchup between Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
